The 2014 Golden Globes & the Dress No One Can Stop Talking About

January 13, 2014

Last night’s Golden Globes went off pretty much as planned: a lot of strutting, posing, eager air-kissing, followed by heavy drinking and a few awkward on-stage encounters.

Queens of the night and BFFs Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did a perfectly polished, if a bit tame, job as hosts. A large part of me wishes the HFPA would just let them run free like they’re meant to. But at least Amy Poehler managed to make out with Bono.

But beyond that, there was really only one thing that mattered: Lupita Nyong’o‘s red-caped Ralph Lauren dress. Hot damn. The sleek look was reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow‘s pristine Tom Ford number a few years back, and as elegant and impactful as Rihanna‘s tomato-red Alaia Grammy dress.

But here, it all came together in a way that was so fresh, easy, and elegant. Lupita was one of the first to walk the carpet and, it’s safe to say, no one afterward even came close.

And if you weren’t wearing red, you might as well have just skulked away into the night. Red reigned supreme; and Lupita’s was the dress to rule them all. Next time I walk the red carpet (never) I’m doing exactly what she does. Some other honorable mentions:

Amy Adams rocking an ethereal deep-V by Valentino.

Emma Watson in a flowy red Dior frock and… black pants? A little baffling, but I like it.

What about you, readers? What did you think of last night’s Golden Globes, or are you already over it?
