Conference to Cocktails: 4 Day-to-night Dresses

Filed in: Your Closet

Welcome to holiday party season: the time of year that “day-to-night” dressing was invented for. Because no woman should have to change into cocktail attire in her office’s bathroom stall at 6:00 p.m. (or any hour, for that matter), we’ve created an army of dresses that transition beautifully from work to play—in fact, our latest jacquard pieces were designed specifically with that purpose in mind. The secret lies in the fabric: It’s slightly thicker, more structured, and a little bit stretchy, so it holds up beautifully on days that start at 7:00 a.m. and go past midnight. (It also has a flattering, shapewear-like effect, which can come in handy after the umpteenth Christmas cookie.) Add unexpected textures and a rich, deep color palette, and you’ll look equally appropriate for a 9:00 a.m. meeting as you will for 8:00 p.m. drinks. Here, MM staffers Lesley and Charlotte take our jacquards for a spin.

Polished and practical at an 11:00 a.m. check-in: Lesley (left) wears the Etsuko in tile, and Charlotte (right) wears the Toi in pebble.

Lose the glasses, add lipstick and open-toed shoes, and you’re ready for questionable dance moves. (Champagne may not help with coordination, but great dresses certainly don’t hurt.)

Throw on a scarf necklace and marquise earrings, and the night is your oyster. (Just make sure no one loses a shoe. It can happen to the best of us.)
