What I Wear When I Need a Hug

3 wearable cocoons to get you through 2020.

By Madeleine Kim

Here’s a weird thing about 2020: sometimes—okay, all the time—I could use a hug. And at this point, 7 months into quarantine, my dog is getting sick of being woken up for a snuggle mid-nap. That’s why I’ve been turning to outfits that feel like full-body hugs: buttery Pima cotton under a decadent layer of lush Merino wool, head-to-toe cashmere, and a pile of sweaters that mimic the effects of a weighted blanket. Here are the outfits that have been getting me through, modeled (and expertly photographed) by our Art Director, Lauren.

Layers That Banish the Sunday Scaries

The Sunday Scaries feel different in quarantine, but they haven’t gone away. To make the most of the day—which, as I often have to remind myself, is still part of the weekend!—I’ve been wearing an outfit that’s comfy enough for post-breakfast lounging, but chic enough that I’m inspired to leave my apartment at least once. Most Sundays (and most other days, for that matter), I pull on my Colby joggers and tuck in one of our super-soft Pima cotton T-shirts (the Marcia and Axam are my favorites). I like to top this outfit with the lush Merino Snyder jacket, which pairs well with cozy nooks and long books.

Basically a Wearable Weighted Blanket

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should tell you that I don’t own a weighted blanket. But this outfit is what I imagine one would feel like: soft, secure, and deeply calming. The cashmere Barbara sweater offers warmth without bulk and is easy to layer under the swingy Sophie sweater for extra coziness. The real magic of this outfit, though, is in the pants. Made from our beloved stretchy-yet-structured jardigan knit, the Rogala stretch culottes are stylish and flattering but feel like a personal blanket for your legs.

A Cashmere Cocoon to Hibernate in

This period of being homebound has taught me to cherish simple pleasures, like the intricate color scheme of a half-changed leaf—or the feeling of cashmere against my skin. On days when I need a little extra optimism, I indulge in an all-cashmere outfit. The Keely joggers were built for lounging but designed with a sleek silhouette that makes them easy to dress up or down. I like to pair them with the polished McKenzie sweater to create a chic, tonal outfit that looks as luxurious as it feels.
