Miyako’s Mood Board: Dance as Inspiration

March 03, 2014

From La Danse by David Hamilton

Every Monday, MM.LaFleur’s designer Miyako Nakamura ruminates on what’s inspiring her this week.

I came out of a building after dancing all night with my friends last Sunday in the early morning. It was the first time in a few years that I’d done that, and I realized how refreshed I felt after.

I started to really think about the act of dancing as something we crave, are attracted to, are inspired by…

There has always been something about dancing and dancers that I sincerely respect. Movement of the body and fashion design are deeply related, and I am constantly thinking about body shape and its movement in my work.

I love the idea that purely the movement of the body can be a form of art. There are two books that I own that express the same appreciation: La Danse by David Hamilton and East Meets West by Issey Miyake. I find their content massively inspiring.
