5 Things You’ll Find in Successful Women’s Pockets

January 25, 2019 | Filed in: Your Closet

At M.M.LaFleur, we believe that when women succeed at work, the world is a better place. We design beautiful, office-appropriate clothing that keeps the spotlight on you, and we host intimate events for the remarkable women in our community.

Keys. Cell phone. Wallet. The code to a secret vault. With pockets, the possibilities are endless. As a brand, we’re 100% pro-pocket (so functional!) and our customers aren’t shy about professing their love for them, either. So we asked a few Women of the Week “What do you keep in your pockets?”

1. Snacks

Maria Woltjen

“I love pockets, especially when I’m giving a talk, which is a big part of my job. I always carry hard candy in my pockets in case I lose my voice or have a scratchy throat. When I speak publicly—at a conference, on a donor briefing, or at our annual fundraising event—I make sure I have a special candy called ‘Glitterati’ from the Vermont Country Store (they’re tiny wrapped candies, perfect for a pocket) or Japanese guava candies that you can find at sushi restaurants. Even if I don’t end up needing them, I feel better knowing they’re right there in the pocket of my Etsuko dress.”

Maria Woltjen, Director of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights at the University of Chicago Law School

2. Tools

Julia Lupton and Ellen Lupton

“A tape measure! As a curator, you never know when you will need to measure something.”

Ellen Lupton, Curator at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

3. Toys

Sarina Prabasi

“I usually have my phone in my pocket, but occasionally there are delightful surprises—my two daughters’ hair clips, small animal figurines, and toy ‘squishees’ (a current favorite) have all been known to end up in my pockets.”

Sarina Prabasi, CEO of WaterAid America

4. The Entire Contents of a Purse

Shira Atkins and Jenny Kaplan

“Generally, pockets are home to my phone, my Apple airpods (and probably at least one other set of headphones). My coat pockets always have extra headphones, gloves, a warm headband, Chapstick, and keys. Now that I’m saying this, I realize I may have one too many pairs of headphones…”

—Jenny Kaplan, Co-founder and CEO of Wonder Media Network

“I always have some kind of lip balm, my phone, my Apple airpods, and usually a loose Metrocard or credit card in there, because who ever remembers to put their Metrocard back into their wallet?”

Shira Atkins, Co-founder and CMO of Wonder Media Network

“My pockets always have my phones (work and personal) and keys. I hate carrying a purse, so pockets are everything.”

Aditi Juneja, Lawyer and activist

“I traveled in Paris and Morocco for two weeks over the holidays and was walking up to 12 miles every day. I quickly decided that carrying a handbag was a waste of energy, so I pared down my essentials to my phone, hotel key, lip balm, and a change purse with some local currency and my ATM card—all of which fit into my pockets.”

Nina Lorez Collins, Co-founder of “The Woolfer,” a website and newsletter for literary-minded women over 40

5. Attitude

Orelon Sidney

“My hands! I like the jaunty confidence that hands in pockets can deliver.”

Julia Lupton, Professor of English at the University of California Irvine

“One hand in my pocket—instant swag.”

Orelon Sidney, Actress and reporter
